October 2023 HRE Update
Hello Everyone,
Welcome to the October HRE Update.
“The AFA Human Rights and Equity Committee is committed to providing the broadest possible representation of our members regardless of age, disability, marital status, national origin, ethnicity, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity and gender expression. We honor and celebrate the shared humanity of the members in our care. We shall at all times endeavor to promote the principles of tolerance, fairness, equity, justice, respect and inclusion within our Union. It is only when we all work together that we can tear down the walls of division and create a progressive culture that values social & economic justice for all working people.”
Here are some key things for you to note for the month of October.
Union Pins
Union pins for the newer JFK crew members should have already been distributed. If you did not receive a union pin, please reach out to me directly at [email protected] and I will ensure to coordinate you getting one.
Hispanic Heritage Month
Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM), which kicked off on September 15, 2023, continues until October 15, 2023.
Some resources to support HHM were previously listed in the September 2023 HRE Update and can be found there.
Filipino American History Month
Filipino American History Month (FAHM), is recognized in October to commemorate the arrival of the first Filipinos in the continental United States at what is now Morro Bay, California on October 18, 1587. In 1992, the Filipino American National Historical Society introduced FAHM, and in 2009 U.S. Congress officially recognized October as FAHM in the U.S.
Here are some ways to highlight and honor FAHM
- Support Filipino-owned businesses and charities
- Wear your AANHPI AFA Pin
- Educate yourself on the Filipino American Experience and the history of Filipinos in America.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month: October 1-31
There are no union pins for Breast Cancer Awareness. However, the company has stated that they will allow crew to wear a pink ribbon behind their Norse or Union pin. Please reach out to your base chief to get these ribbons.

Indigenous People's Day: October 9
World Mental Health Day: October 10
